If you've been following along, you know that early on we had some issues with feeding that caused Rose to lose almost a pound in 12 days (you can read about it here). Today, I'm happy to say that that is no longer an issue. She has officially regained and surpassed her birth weight! Yesterday we had our one month check-up, yes one month already I can't believe it, and Rose weighed in at 8lbs 7oz. Her weight is officially back on track and she currently sits in the 34th percentile.
Our plan to use a combination of breastfeeding and formula supplementation is working out beautifully. As I mentioned, Breast Feeding is Hard, and Rose doesn't always seem to be getting enough. We never planned on having to use formula but we are happy we did. It takes some pressure off the Misses and allows me to bond more with my little one. The biggest pro to using formula is that Rose is happy and we know she's getting enough. Now that she's not constantly hungry, we have time to focus on the rest of her development. For example, she's now able to get floor and tummy-time throughout the day which has really allowed her to build up her muscles quick. She can hold her head up for a short while now. We also get to read books, look at the great big world, and give her massages.
Supplementing with formula was not in our original plan, but I sure am happy that we've incorporated into our new plan. A popular saying is that "breast is best." Heck as a Dietitian even I used to say it. But now, I don't think that that statement is complete. I think it should read, "breast is best when it works for you and YOUR baby." If its not working out, i.e. baby is losing too much weight, can't express enough milk, or mom's supply isn't sufficient, parents should not hesitate or feel bad to supplement. The only one that suffers by prolonging supplementation when needed is your baby. With that being said, I am and always will be pro breast feeding. Breast milk is the best food for your baby, and I think that all mothers should definitely prioritize breastfeeding.
The take away here, is that you should let your baby be your guide.
Tips & Lessons Learned:
- Make breast feeding a priority.
-Don't be afraid to supplement if needed
-Make sure your wife knows that she should not feel like a failure if she is not producing enough milk
- Be sure to use pre-mixed formula vs powdered
- Check for coupons. Manufacturers are always giving out coupons.
- Use a slow-flow nipple when bottle feeding
- Burp. Always burp.
